What ColorZilla is

An eyedropper for the browser: hover anything on a page, click, and the color lands on your clipboard as HEX or RGB. It saves the loop of screenshotting a page and opening an image editor to read one value.

It also reads the colors already used on a page and generates CSS gradients, which is handy when you are matching a new section to an existing design.

Good for

  • Matching a new element to a color already used on the site
  • Pulling a brand color off a client’s existing website
  • Reading colors out of a design published as a web page

Worth knowing

  • What you pick is the rendered color — opacity and blending can make it differ from the value in the CSS.
  • For colors inside an image, the browser picker is fine; for print work you need a proper color-managed tool.
