What Cloudflare is
Putting Cloudflare in front of a site changes three things at once: static files are served from a location near the visitor, HTTPS is handled for you, and obvious attack traffic never reaches your server.
The DNS management is worth it on its own — changes take effect quickly, and having DNS in the same place as the CDN removes a category of confusing misconfiguration.
Good for
- Speeding up a site for visitors far from your server
- Getting HTTPS and DNS handled without server work
- Absorbing traffic spikes and basic attacks
Worth knowing
- Caching is the part that bites: after a deploy, purge the cache or visitors keep seeing the old page.
- Moving DNS means changing nameservers at your registrar — plan it, do not do it in a hurry.
