SSL checker

See whether a site's certificate is valid, when it expires and which domain names it covers.

This tool runs on the Holsha server. Files and addresses are processed on the spot and not stored.

Questions

What happens when an SSL certificate expires?

Browsers show a full-page security warning and most visitors leave. Online payments, APIs and apps that connect to the site stop working until the certificate is renewed.

Why does a valid certificate still show an error?

The most common reasons are a certificate issued for a different name (for example example.com but not www.example.com) and a missing intermediate certificate on the server.

How often should certificates be renewed?

Free Let’s Encrypt certificates last 90 days and renew automatically when set up correctly. Paid certificates are limited to about a year, and the maximum lifetime is being shortened further over the next few years, so automatic renewal matters more and more.
